Overview

What is the manufacturer's base warranty period on my vehicle?
For GM vehicles, the manufacturer's base warranty period is defined as 36 months or 60,000 kilometres, whichever comes first, with the following exceptio

  • All Cadillac as well as 2006 and forward Buick and HUMMER vehicles have a base warranty period of 48 months or 80,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.

This may be different for non-GM vehicles, but a 36-month or 60,000 kilometres warranty is the industry standard.

Certain GM vehicles come with a supplemental Powertrain Warranty:

  • All 2007 vehicles have either a 36 months or 60,000 kilometres, or a 48 months or 80,000 kilometres base warranty with an additional Powertrain Limited Warranty period of 60 months and 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.

My vehicle is covered by the manufacturer's base warranty. Why should I purchase a GM Protection Plan?
The manufacturer's base warranty generally is for 36 months or 60,000 kilometres, some GM models offer a 48 month or 80,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. Most customers drive their vehicles more than 60,000 kilometres in three years.
Consider purchasing the GM Protection Plan for your GM vehicle:

  • If you drive more than 2,000 kilometres monthly and plan to lease or finance your vehicle for more than 36 months, or
  • If you want to decrease your financial exposure to repair costs

For vehicles with the supplemental Powertrain Warranty, the GM Protection Plan would provide you with coverage beyond the Powertrain Warranty, with:

  • Coverage for Steering; Front and Rear Suspension; Brakes; Electrical and Accessories; Air conditioning; High Tech Features; and Exterior and Interior components.
  • The added strength of the GM Powertrain Warranty, the GM Protection Plan Total 'Plus' (see Coverage and Benefits section) pricing has been reduced making comprehensive coverage for your vehicle even more affordable.

I thought GM vehicles were good vehicles. Why do I need a GM Protection Plan?
GM vehicles are designed, assembled and tested to very high standards, but components used in today's vehicles are extremely complex and expensive to repair. Purchasing a GM Protection Plan provides financial security against the rising cost of unexpected repair expense. Today's GM Protection Plan will protect you against future costs for covered repairs.

I purchased a vehicle service contract on my current vehicle and never used it. Why do I want to purchase another service agreement?
Congratulations - your current vehicle is performing as expected. You have not been inconvenienced or responsible for expensive repairs. Vehicle service contracts are similar to warranties or auto insurance. You certainly hope you will not have to use it, but you do not want the risk or uncertainty of paying for an accident repair or theft. By purchasing a GM Protection Plan, you transfer the uncertainty and financial risk of expensive, covered repairs to the GM Protection Plan.

When does a GM Protection Plan begin?
The term and kilometres of coverage is calculated from the in service date and zero (0) kilometres.

When does a GM Protection Plan end?
Vehicle service contracts purchased will clearly state when a contract begins and ends. The GMPP purchased will terminate or expire at the end of the time and kilometre term selected (whichever occurs first), from the date the vehicle was first put in service (Factory In-Service Date) and at zero (0) kilometres. The term of the Vehicle Service Contract includes the Manufacturer's base warranty.
